Little Paris of Athens 2014 9-19/10

From Belle Époque to World War I – 100 years after

Multiple events including art, theatre, music and dance venues along with street art & theatre, film screenings, fashion shows conferences and discussion forums.

“Little Paris of Athens” is a festival organized regularly by the Athens Art Network action group each October, in the greater Central Athens Area extending  from Karaiskaki and Vathi Square to Larissa Station. It takes place in city patches delimited by streets bearing the names of 19th century french dignitaries sympathetic to the Greek Liberation Struggle, hence the name “Little Paris”. It is an urban zone where Athens Gentry and Popular culture combine with Greek folklore and the cultures of Third countries immigrants.

This initiative at its start, aimed at bringing cultural and artistic bloom in one of the most deprived and derelict parts of Athens. It has evolved into an acclaimed, multi-facetted cultural event, with international dimension. Last year’s festival was dedicated to French writer Albert Camus, on the occasion of his centenary.

The 2014 edition, honouring the 100th anniversary of World War I outbreak, gets its inspiration out of the Belle Époque era. It suggests the idea that a period of thriving cultural experimentation was not able to prevent the war massacre. The period in question, which followed the industrial revolution, is inspiring the artistic and cultural events, which –for the second year in a row- will spread out, in a neighbourhood that is among the most destitute of the Greater Athens area.

During 10 days, more than 500 artists, creators and commentators will parade in 30 select locations (street corners, squares, stages, music academies, schools, art galleries, cafes, movie theatres and alternative spaces).
Plays, concerts, floor shows, art and photo exhibitions, street art, film screenings, fashion, conferences and debates among creators are here to cast a light into an era that presents a lot of resemblances with today.

Visit the neighbourhood of the National Conservatory (Ethnicon Odeion), of Finos Film Production Company, and walk the streets of artistic creation and positive spirit!
