The Lighting and Handover Ceremonies of the Olympic Flame for the “RIO 2016” Olympic Games
The Lighting of the Olympic Flame is held in Ancient Olympia and the Hellenic Olympic Committee is responsible for the Ceremony. The first Lighting took place in 1936 for the Berlin Olympic Games by the means of a concave mirror.
This year’s ceremony is a special anniversary of 80 years. 80 years blessed with memories and symbolic messages spread all over the world. As the light of god Apollo travels from the birthplace of the Ancient Olympic Games to 5 continents bearing the values of peace and culture.
The lighting ceremony of the Olympic Flame at Ancient Olympia will take place on April 21st.
On its journey, the Olympic Flame will cross the majority of the Greek territory, including islands like Zante and Corfu.
6 days later will enter Athens – Attica from Marathonas town. Following the classic marathon route will reach the city of Athens. The Olympic Flame torch relay in a symbolic move will visit the Open Reception Centre for Refugees in Eleonas andd a refugee will carry the Flame as a Torchbearer.
The Olympic Flame will next visit the Acropolis & the Acropolis Museum.
The grand Handover ceremony of the Olympic Flame for “RIO 2016” will take place at Panathenaic Stadium on April 27, at 17:00 (Free entrance)
The support programme for the Hellenic Olympic Team is named “HELLAS YOU CAN DO IT” with the famous Greek singer Sakis Rouvas as head of the programme along with 3 Greek Olympic champions.
